What Should Parents Wear for Newborn Family Photos?
By Marianna · Golden Art Photography · Updated 2026-10-12
Choose comfortable clothes that work together and let you hold your baby naturally. For newborn family portraits, a small color palette helps keep attention on faces, hands and connection. You do not need matching outfits or a new wardrobe.
Start with one outfit you enjoy
Build the family palette around a piece that fits comfortably now. Soft neutrals or a few related colors can make coordination easier, but your preferences matter more than a fixed rule. Discuss the backdrop and newborn wraps with Marianna before buying clothes to match them.
Try the clothes while sitting and holding
Check how sleeves, necklines and layers feel when you sit or lift your arms. Clothing that requires constant adjustment can distract you from being with your baby. Bring a backup if that would help you feel prepared. Allow room for the usual spills and surprises of a day with a newborn.
Coordinate without making everyone identical
- Lay everyone's outfits together before the session.
- Keep large logos and several competing patterns to a minimum.
- Choose sibling clothes they can move in comfortably.
- Ask grandparents to use the same broad color family.
These suggestions apply to collections that include family portraits. Simply Baby is a baby-only collection, so parents do not need to plan a photographed outfit unless the booking changes.
